New Delhi: At the instance of Sonia Gandhi, her confidant and strategist Ahmed Patel is calling the shots on who, after Rahul Gandhi, will be as the next Congress President. Patel is also identifying changes that Rahul should make as part of the responsibility put on him by Saturday’s CWC meeting for a thorough party revamp.
According to sources Patel has asked Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to better step down and give the reins to Deputy CM Sachin Pilot in view of Rahul having identifying him, Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath and former union minister P Chaidambaram, forcing him to give the party ticket to their sons.
It would not come as a surprise if Kamal Nath is asked, in the coming days, to pave way for Jyotiraditya Scindia to become the chief minister, as these two steps may pacify Rahul’s anger and lead him to reconsider his resignation. Patel has invariably been visiting Rahul’s Tughlaq Lane residence every day since Monday to persuade him to rethink on his resignation during this crucial juncture when the party is in crisis at both the national and state levels.
