Attacks on TN fishermen: HC joins issue with Jaya

Chennai : On a day Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa shot off yet another letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the persistent arrests of the State’s fishermen in Sri Lanka, the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) frowned on the continuing attacks on the fishermen.

The court also wondered why the Central Government was hesitating to file a counter affidavit declaring its decision to sell ships to Sri Lankan Navy. A bench comprising Justice R Sudhakar and Justice V M Velumani gave the direction, while hearing a petition from a lawyer seeking to restrain the Indian Government from going ahead with its alleged proposal to sell warships to the Island Nation. “If one day Nagapattinam fishermen are being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, the next day fishermen from Rameswaram are targeted. Another day, Kanyakumari fishermen are being torture. It has become a habit to target Tamil fishermen in mid sea,” the judges said.
