In a shocking incident, a Muslim man was abused and heckled for allegedly selling beef in Assam’s Biswanath district on Sunday.

The man was identified as Shaukat Ali by the police. A video has now gone viral on social media, shows that the man can be seen being thrashed by a group of men in a market place and questioned on his national identity. According to police, Shaukat Ali, who has been running a business in the area for about 35 years, was attacked after the mob found out that he was allegedly selling cooked beef in the weekly ‘Haat (market).

In the video, it can be heard that Shaukat Ali is seen being asked if he was a Bangladeshi, if he has a licence and if he had an NRC certificate.  In a second video, however, the situation worsened when the miscreants started thrashing Shaukat Ali and allegedly forced him to eat pork meat. Ali, who sustained injuries, is being treated in a local hospital in Assam. According to the district police, the mob then went on to misbehave with the mahaldar, Kamal Thapa, as well.

The local police have registered two FIRs against unknown miscreants by Kamal Thapa and the other by Shaukat Ali’s relatives and according to NDTV police have detained at least five people.
