Sonitpur/Jorhat (Assam): The flood situation in Assam has affected over 1.95 lakh people in more than 550 villages and destroyed crops in more than 8,200 hectares in the state. Following incessant rains over the past few days, the flood like situation has affected daily life of villagers in the state’s Sonitpur district. In the Jorhat district, ferry services to Majuli Island were suspended due to rising water level and strong current in the river Brahmaputra. Assam State Disaster Management Authority said that more than 1.95 lakh people have been hit in the first wave of flood across Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur,Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Baksa, Dibrugarh and Kamrup districts. Meanwhile. authorities have opened three relief camps at Tinsukia and one at Sonitpur.
