Paradip: A day after four members of a family were charred to death here, Paradip Port Trust (PPT) as well as district administration today clarified that the area where the incident took place belonged to state government.
The area where the fire broke out in an unauthorised thatched cluster in wee hours yesterday is under Irrigation department of the government and not PPT as stated earlier, Additional District Magistrate (Paradip), Ramakrushna Sahu said.
“The fire incident took place on government land. It is not under port area. Residents of the area are also not our workers,” PPT Chairman Sudhansu Mishra said.
The ADM said the family members of the deceased, who hailed from Kanas area of Puri district, were handed over the bodies after post-mortem. Steps are being taken to provide assistance to the family of the deceased, he said.
The residents of the area whose houses were gutted in the fire have been sheltered in a temporary camp and arrangements made to provide them with food, blankets and other essentials, he said.
Officials had yesterday stated that the unauthorised thatched houses in the colony had come up in the area belonging to PPT.
