Amarnath Shrine Cloudburst: PM Modi takes stock of situation, says 'all possible assistance is being provided'

According to latest reports, 10 casualties have been reported and three were rescued alive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed anguish after a cloudburst hit near the base camp of the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas. He said he has spoken to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and took stock of the situation.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi wrote, "Anguished by the cloud burst near Shree Amarnath cave. Condolences to the bereaved families. Spoke to @manojsinha_ Ji and took stock of the situation. Rescue and relief operations are underway. All possible assistance is being provided to the affected."

Meanwhile, according to latest reports, 10 casualties have been reported and three were rescued alive.

"One NDRF team is always deployed near the holy cave, it immediately engaged in the rescue work. One more team has been deployed & another is on its way. 10 casualties reported so far; 3 rescued alive," said NDRF DG Atul Karwal.

"Cloudburst reported at around 5:30pm. High momentum water flow affected many tents. Our crew is engaged in rescue work. 2 out of our 3 teams engaged. J&K Police, Indian Army & ITBP also engaged. Initial momentum decreasing, we'll be prepared for every situation," he added.

The Amarnath Yatra, meanwhile, has been temporarily suspended after the incident.
