Raipur: Deputy Director of the Geology and Mining Department was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau here today for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000, an official said.

“Sudhir Kumar Singh (57) who was posted at the Office of the Regional Head, Geology and Mining, was caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a man for issuing lab testing report of limestone, for setting up a mine,” the official said.

According to the complainant, Vijay Gupta, a native of Mahasamund, he had submitted two applications at the Office of the Regional Head, Geology and Mining, Raipur for lab testing of limestone, in order to set up a mine in Akoladih-Khapri village.

Applications were pending at the office for a year, but the lab test was not being carried out.

When Vijay approached Deputy Director Sudhir Kumar Singh and requested him to issue the lab report, the officer demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh, the official said.

Later, the complainant contacted the ACB and lodged a complaint, as well as convinced the accused to accept the money in instalments. After verifying the complaint, the ACB laid a trap.

Singh agreed to accept the first instalment of Rs 40,000 and was arrested while accepting the bribe at his office located in Ghadi Chowk, he said.

A case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against him, he said.
