Hyderabad: Stepping up its security measures, Hyderabad Police will install 5,000 advanced CCTV cameras at all public places and junctions in the city.

The step is being taken under the Safe City project and AP Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act-2013.

“We intend to install about 5,000 CCTV cameras under the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerate limits,” Andhra Pradesh DGP V Dinesh Reddy told reporters here today.

The state government in June had promulgated ‘AP Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act-2013’, which makes it mandatory to put in place certain public safety measures in all establishments in view of recurring incidents of terror attack in the city.

The Act makes it mandatory for all establishments, where a gathering of 100 or more people is expected at a time, to provide access controls and install closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras.

The Centre has approved Megacity Policing plan covering the Commissionerates of certain Metropolitan cities. Hyderabad was included in the plan for which a central allocation of Rs 48.10 crore has been earmarked for 2013-14 and 2014-15.

As per the Centre’s suggestion, preparation of a Detailed Project Report for the action plan is under process. The plan will cover guidelines of Safe City project, such as CCTV surveillance, command control centres, Dial 100, data centre, highway patrol cars, aerial surveillance, community policing, training of soft skills etc.

The DGP said 90 more reception centres or front offices will be set up in police stations across the state to provide people-friendly and accessible services.
