New Delhi: 1,418 of the 1,441 NIT Srinagar students, who chose not to sit for examination in April, had returned to the institute by the beginning of this week, the government said.

In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said for students who exercised the option of not taking Minor-I examination in April, the test has been rescheduled from May 5 to May 8.

“Of the 1,441 students who exercised the option, 1,418 had returned to the institute by May 2 (Monday),” the minister added. The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar had witnessed tension following clashes between groups of students after India lost to West Indies in a semifinal of T20 World Cup cricket match.

A majority of outstation students had then left the institute.
