Taming unruly tresses with some care

‘And she woke up… unable to look at the mirror because the harrowing sight that awaited her was too much for her to handle, the first thing in the morning!’

Rings true for you? Are your unruly tresses the reason, like hers? Well, in this fast-paced world where one doesn’t seem to find time for oneself, it could be a real dampener. Either we are spending too much of our spare time whenever we get a little to pamper our hair, or we are too busy to care, when all we want to do is either grab coffee with a friend, go clubbing or just tuck ourselves in a couch and while away the time by getting the much needed sleep that we have been ignoring from some time now.

In the process of keeping up with ourselves, we often end up with little time to pamper ourselves because either we are too busy to care or simply not bothered. But guess what? Pampering yourself is a great way of vitalizing your body and mind and leaving you spurting up with energy (yes, even on a Monday).

Why the hair, made up of dead cells, you ask? It’s simply because hair is your “crowning glory” and when I say that, I also mean pampering your head- the cooker that seems ready to burst, at times, thanks to the pressures that come in uninvited. For even bald is beautiful and there are many who would prefer to go bald any day or have been rendered bald due to an unavoidable circumstance. But it is still important to massage your head everyday for a few minutes. It improves the blood circulation and also helps one to sleep better.  You will surely be delighted at the result.

Now, with a range of oils available, you wonder which one to use. Hair- right from curly to poker-straight, from oily to unbearably dry- the confusion only heightens its whiskers.

First and foremost, let’s clear some myths.

Do you have dry, brittle, rough hair in spite of washing and conditioning it every day? Stop it now. You are overdoing it, stripping your hair off essential moisture and exposing it to harsh chemicals and treating it to undue stress.

I was one of those to wash my hair every day because that’s what I had grown up doing. But the increasing hair strands all around the house scared me. I tried doing what most of my friends did- washing it twice or thrice a week. Eureka! Hair fall had not only reduced but my hair  became more lustrous and less limp.

Yes, initially it is very difficult with doubts ranging from- ‘How else will I feel fresh every morning to what about dandruff?’ (In my case, even the dandruff bit has reduced, probably because my scalp is not so dry anymore). Of course, with varying hair texture and type, it is important to find what suits you best before following what I say, blindly.

I have a friend who hasn’t touched oil on her hair from years. Sure she does have long hair but I find something lacking, for it looks too dry to me once she washes it. After a few days, the sebaceous glands in the head do the trick for her and it is manageable enough for her, or so I think.

But oiling hair has been a joy for me since childhood. Which oil, you wonder? My cousin has been an avid surfer and she suggested this and truth be told, I am liking it!

Before an hour or two of washing your hair, dip a towel in warm water and squeeze out the excess water. Wrap your hair with it. Repeat twice or thrice.

NOTE: It’s done to open up the pores so that the oil penetrates better. Never wash your hair just after doing it as it would lead to greater hair fall.

It would only lead to dryer, rougher hair. Wipe your hair with soft cotton cloth and let it dry naturally rather than using dryer.

It leads to hair breakage and those of you looking out for some natural curls, combing wet hair would lead to an end to that dream, for then.

Tie up your hair rather than leaving it open to attract the dust, moisture from the air when travelling. But never tie it up when wet as it would lead to hair damage. When you cover up with a scarf, it not only protects you from the harsh rays of the sun but also protects your skin from excessive sun tan.

So head out with a strong and shiny mane and when you untie your hair, may it lead to cheers from your friends!
