The festival of Diwali means it is the season of joy, splendor, happiness and endless celebration and delightful delicacies. It’s the time of the year when friends and families get together and celebrate the festival of lights. In the midst of rejoicing Diwali, we often tend to binge on sweets and fried foods that are high on calories, making it common for people to feel guilty once the festive high wears off.

Here’s how you can detox easily to get toxins out of your system and get you back in shape and good health.

My Greenscold press juices give us inputs on detox, “Detoxifying means cleaning or flushing out unwanted toxic substances from the body. Toxic substances are present everywhere in the world, whether it is the food we eat or the air we breathe. Other than external toxins, internally as well our body produces toxic free radicals. Imbalances like stress, emotional disturbances and even anxiety all create these toxic radicals in our body.

Usually body has its own natural mechanism to get rid of these toxins, for example by crying, sweating, urination or even defecation. But with the increasing levels of chemicals, pesticides in our food, and with the increasing levels of stress in our society and work place the level of toxicity is becoming overwhelming for the body. With every passing day rare diseases like cancer, obesity and diabetes have become more common.

These toxins gradually affect both the structure and function of our body cells. They lead to a stack of health issues like chronic fatigue, autoimmune disorders, migraines, early aging, digestive problems like constipation, diarrhea or bloating, even skin problems, PMS, food allergies are all a result of toxic built up in the body. The improvised medical care might enable us to live longer but not free from illness or diseases.

Thus detoxification beyond the natural body’s process has become a necessity today. It truly reverses the symptoms of illness and changes your life. As a nutritionist though, I feel compelled to state that juice cleanses are an absolutely wonderful way to thoroughly cleanse or detox your entire body. Since you do not have to chew your digestive system is given a rest and allowed time to repair and rejuvenate.

Juicing your food floods your body with live enzymes and an abundance of antioxidants that help not only neutralize free radicals but also strengthen and support the immune system, reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, concentration and memory, improve circulation and increase energy.  Antioxidants even have anti-aging properties. They are literally a life-changing miracle food.

Benefits Of Detox-

In earlier times detox would have been good only for adults due to their habit of overindulging in food and drinks. But with changing times, even children have got exposed to toxic (polluted) environment, adulterated food, wrong eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. Thus it has become equally important for them to detox themselves.

Very long strict cleansing days (one month) are not recommended. Cleansing with juices and liquids is good for 0ne day, three days or maximum five days. One should prepare their body to go on such cleanse and just not jump start with them. Always start with a one day cleanse and then gradually progress further.

India is one of the leading countries for air pollution. During Diwali the level of pollution fourfold itself. Along with air toxins, the fried savory snacks and sweets pushes you into the arena of over indulging. The late night parties, with drinks and snacks will thrush you with load of toxins, which eventually would clog your internal body system. Hence it will be extremely important for everyone to detox and cleanse yourself post Diwali to keep your body system at its full efficacy.

To start with (a) Eat fresh foods like fruits and vegetables in form of soups, salad and fresh juices. (b) Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and tea for hydration. (c) Reduce your oil intake to negligible. Say no to fried food. Use oil sparingly while cooking. Pick boiling, steaming, roasting, pressure cooking, baking or grilling as the preferred method of cooking. (d) Exercise: At least 30 minutes of brisk walk for at least 5 days a week will really help. Move around as much as possible. Avoid too much sitting even at work place.

Do not starve or try to skip your meals to detox or lose weight. This will reduce your body’s metabolic rate and would rather induce weight gain and further create toxins in your body.
Once you are a little on track you should go on a juice detox for either one or three days to thoroughly cleanse your system. But do a cleanse on a weekend so that the body is at rest and not worked out.

Pallavi Srivastava, Celebrity & Fitness Nutritionist & Proprietor- Q- Slim Fitness Studio says, “ Diwali is not only about crackers and diyas, its also about sweets and fried snacks, with the festival, our houses get filled with the rich aromas of Gulab Jamun, barfi, chakli and other fried snacks, and we more often than usual indulge thinking it’s the festival and this is the only way to celebrate !The best way to cleanse our body post Diwali is to Detox for a couple of days, which not only help the body to recover from the trauma of all the fried snacks and unhealthy eating habits and the lack of Exercise, but also give some rest to the vital organs.”

Pallavi advices how to go about it:

The most important point to remember during this time is that you do not starve yourself  and not look at it as a Weight Loss Option. Exercise well, Meditate, Eat well and healthy so the cleansing process completes itself in the most natural way!! Make sure you consult your Nutritionist before starting the diet to cross check if that suits your body type and if you have any Medical Conditions.
