Mumbai : The distress faced by Mumbai citizens on account of water clogging during the forthcoming monsoon is expected to be eased a little this year.

Trushna Vishwasrao, leader of the house in the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and a Shiv Sena corporator, announced that the much awaited work of storm water pumping stations have been completed and will be operative from this month.

Vishwasrao said, “The Britannia pumping station situated at Reay Road will help to force out water much faster this monsoon and avoid water logging at these places. The six pumping stations worth Rs 106 crore will pump out 6000 litres of water per second.” Areas like Hindmata, Parel, Byculla station, Kalachowkie, Lalbaug, Sewri witnesses the most water clogging during monsoons.

Yashodhar Phanse, chairman of the standing committee of the MCGM, said that these water pumping stations will run on three diesel generators. “Not all the six pumping stations will be used at the same time as a single station alone can pump out a great amount of water. Only in the rarest of the rare cases will we require all the pumping stations,” he said.

After the city’s infamous de-silting scam and the nullah safai work which is still incomplete, Vishwasrao said that the de-silting work is expected to be completed by May 31. “The Sena is being targeted when it comes to approving proposals (tabled at the last standing committee meeting on disposal places of the silt was not taken for which the Sena was blamed) which is not true. Instead, proposals of city’s development that needs immediate attention should be addressed quickly,” she added.
