Will it be Smriti against Sonia?

New Delhi : Ever since the Congress replaced its lightweight candidate in Vadodara against Narendra Modi, the BJP is itching to put up some semblance of a fight in Gandhi pocket boroughs — Amethi and Rai Bareilly – from where Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Sonia Gan-dhi would be contesting.

The name of former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti is doing the rounds as a possible candidate against Sonia Gandhi and that of Smriti Irani against Rahul Gandhi. Irani, it is understood, has been sounded but is yet to get back to the BJP leadership. If she agrees to contest, she would be taking on both Rahul and AAP leader Kumar Vishwas.

Born in a Bengali-Punjabi family and married to a Parsi, Smriti Irani, a mother of three children (including one child from her husband’s first marriage), is a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat.

The first indication on Uma Bharti came from yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who has asked the BJP to pull her out of Jhansi and deploy her in Rae Bareilly.  Earlier, Uma was keen to contest from Bhopal.

Discussions are underway in the BJP on fielding the two articulate leaders in the two aforesaid seats, senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the suspense on Varanasi seat continues with Congress sources indicating at Digvijay Singh is unlikely to take on Modi. The candidate is likely to be a ‘local’ on whom there will be an understanding of sorts between the SP and the Congress.
