Uma Bharti: (55) – BJP
Constituency: Jhansi (UP)
Ministry: Water resources
The maverick politician is prone to controversy. During the Lok Sabha campaign, she hit the headlines for a video that showed her describing Modi as vinash purush (man of destruction).
Clearly, she doesn’t have the best of equations with Modi, but her win from Jhansi and her backward credentials make her a ministerial choice. Her relocation to UP has also kept her out of Madhya Pradesh where her influence has dwindled. Before her resignation as Madhya Pradesh chief minister in 2004, her career had been on an upswing. Thereafter, she quit BJP and unsuccessfully floated her own outfit.
By the time she returned, Shivraj Singh Chouhan was well set as CM. Earlier in her career, Bharti was seen as a FULL FLOW Ram temple stormtrooper and faced trial in the Babri Masjid case. At the same time, her oratory style was seen by the BJP as an asset even as her individual style -driving a white Gypsy around her rural constituency and Barbie dolls on her dressing table -kept her in the news, attracting the label of “sexy sanyasin“. After her electoral debut in Lok Sabha in 1989, she won three more elections back to back.
She has now made a return to the lower House.
