In the wake of the ongoing ban on Pakistan artists enforced by the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA), the entire Bollywood fraternity seems divided by the issue. Some celebrities like Salman Khan, Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap are opposing the ban by saying that Pakistani artists are not terrorists; while there are celebrities like Nana Patekar, Anupam Kher, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, among others, who are strongly in support of the ban.
After Salman Khan’s uproar over the issue, veteran actor Amrish Puri has invited a new controversy by insulting martyred soldiers while defending the ban of actors. Om Puri was invited at a leading news channel for a debate over the ban of Pakistani actors by IMPPA after the Uri attack. The actor got annoyed and made a statement saying, “Who had asked the soldiers to join the army? Who told them to pick weapons? The actor even said that the artists in the country were not working illegally they are working with a valid visa. He further mentioned that if the Pakistani actors are banned from the country, it will lead to heavy loss of money and business for the producers who had already signed films with the actors.
Soon after his statement came, he was slammed on social media including Facebook and Twitter with hashtag #shameompuri and #OmPuriSaySorry.
Some of the Twitter reactions are:
Om Puri – Kisne Kaha Ki Army Join Karo. Insult to our martyrs. Never expected this from him, who even played role of soldier in Lakshya film
