New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Thursday appeared inclined to defer the NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test), a centralised test, for only this year in the states that hold own examination for admissions in medical and dental graduation courses, while firmly saying ‘no’ to any private colleges holding their own tests for admissions.

The Bench of Justices Anil Dave, Shiva Kirti Singh and Adarsh Kumar Goel asked the Solicitor General to convey the Centre’s stand on the states’ plea by Friday. It also asked him whether the students who appeared in NEET on May 1 can take it again on July 24, since results of both phases are to be declared on August 17.

Several states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, told the court that they are prepared to hold NEET from next year, but not immediately as the students in their states had prepared for only the state-level pre-medical tests.
