Mumbai : Despite the big row over non-vegetarian food in a society in Dahisar on Thursday, it now transpires that the fight was not over diet but over some petty issues.

Society office-bearers have confirmed that there was no issue regarding the non-vegetarian diet and the incident took place out of personal rivalry.

Chavan had filed a police complaint against several residents of Bonaventure Society on Rangnath Keskar road in Dahisar, saying they attacked his flat late on Thursday and manhandled his family over cooking and eating non-vegetarian food.

Police said an FIR had been filed on Chavan’s complaint and they are recording statements of the other parties. Other residents of the society however contradicted Chavan’s claims and denied that the row was over non-vegetarian food.

During a dinner get-together in the building garden on Thursday, waste water and garbage was thrown from Chavan’s flat.

This irked the residents, making them rush to Chavan’s flat to check the reason for their act. Chavan has blown the matter out of proportion, the residents have said.

Earlier, NCP MLA from Mumbra Jitendra Awhad was taken into preventive detention by police on Saturday after he went to Dahisar to protest the beating of the Chavan family.

Awahad had a clash with the office-bearers of the society and the police, but was later released, police said.

Awhad and others who had gone to protest the attack were detained for a brief period. “Awhad was taken into preventive detention,” said Vikram Deshmane, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11). NCP has alleged that Awhad was manhandled.

Awhad said that this incident was a deliberate attempt on part of the ruling BJP to support the Gujarati community and suppress the local Marathi community. Shiv Sena and MNS too protested against the incident today.
