NEW DELHI : The Congress on Saturday blasted the Modi government for trying to blame the previous UPA government instead of owning up the decision to effect an unprecedented hike in rail fares and freight rates. It staged a demonstration in the capital, asserting that the hike demonstrates how Narendra Modi grabbed power with false promises of having cure for all ills of the country. Party general secretary Digvijaya Singh challenged the Prime Minister to accept truths than try to wriggle out blaming the previous government for the hard decisions he was taking now.
In a Twitter post, he said: “To govern a country and to find faults are two different things. There is always a justification for the Government to take hard decisions. But should the people be taken for a ride? To be a statesman, a leader has to speak the truth whether in government or opposition. I hope Modi realises this now.”
Only a day earlier, former finance minister P Chidambaram had chided Modi for wrong claim of the UPA government leaving the coffers empty and asked him to accept the vicious attacks made by him and BJP on then government on the management of economy were unfounded and unfair.
AICC general secretary and media chief Ajay Maken exposed Modi for writing a letter to Dr Manmohan Singh against the pre-budget rail freight hike two years ago.
