New Delhi : Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor has written to Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde requesting him to make available all details of the investigation, including the CCTV footage, to the media to end unbridled speculation.
Saying he was “horrified to read the reckless speculation rampant” in the media, he has offered his complete cooperation in the investigation. The truth will end the indignity to which he and his wife were being subjected, he has pointed out.
Later in the evening, Tharoor also recorded his statement in writing before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Though there was no official word on what the 57-year-old Minister said, sources said he was asked about events prior to the death of his wife. He was also asked about his relationship with Pakistani columnist Mehr Tarar. The minister left without speaking to the media. With this, the SDM’s part of the inquiry is over and the post-mortem report is awaited.
The magistrate also recorded the statement of TV journalist Nalini Singh, who was the last person Pushkar called from her mobile, according to phone records. He also had a word with Sunanda’s son, brother, and five members of their personal staff.
Investigators said the couple had had altercations in the past and even on Thursday night they had a heated exchange which continued till around 4:30 am on Friday. After that, Tharoor had slept on a sofa in the drawing room while Sunanda remained in the bedroom of the suite. Officials have recovered anti-depressant drugs from Sunanda’s room in Hotel Leela Palace. Investigators are also examining call and SMS details from her phone number.
The All India Institute of Medical The post-mortem also revealed that she had not consumed any solid food. Sunanda’s body had “some physical injuries” but it was unclear whether they were related to her death. The medical report on Monday will reveal whether the injuries had any bearing on death.
Earlier this week, Sunanda told the media she had stumbled upon evidence of an affair between her husband and a Pakistani journalist, to whom she sent a series of angry tweets.
But on Thursday, the Tharoors issued a statement saying they were “happily married.” Sunanda was found dead at Leela hotel in the capital on Friday night. According to doctors, she might have died between 1pm to 7pm. Tharoor was not at the hotel during this period and attending the AICC session.
