Irked by corporator’s antics on potholes, more than  4,200 civic officials proceed on an indefinite strike.

Mumbai : Demanding strict action against MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande who deceived a senior civic official into a public shaming act, more than 4,200 civic engineers and officials have resigned and have threatened that they will not repair a single pothole until Deshpande is arrested.

The MNS has blamed the chief of the road department and his team for the menace. Meanwhile, the engineer and officials of all the departments met Ajoy Mehta on Thursday, seeking his support and action against Deshpande but after receiving no response from him, they decided to resign and go on an indefinite strike.

The officials received strong support from MCGM-led Shiv Sena’s leader Trushna Vishwasrao and Corporator Kishori Pednekar. “We will hand over the hydraulic department keys to the chief and go on strike, the administrative work will be affected but, we assure that the citizens will get water,” said an humiliated hydraulic department official.

Earlier, civic engineers and officials from several departments also decided to go on an indefinite strike from Friday over Deshpande’s antics.

In its Thursday edition, the Free Press Journal reported (Tricked and Clicked) wherein Deshpande had given an ultimatum of one week to the corporation in the previous standing committee meeting of the civic body for repairing the city’s potholes. Deshpande said that if the road department fails to repair the potholes, then he will make the civic official responsible for this to stand on a road filled with potholes with a placard that states ‘I am responsible for the potholes in the city’. The MCGM witnessed an outburst on Thursday from its officials since chief engineer of roads Sanjay Darade along with 400 senior civic officials, who will be joining the strike with him, rallied outside the MCGM headquarters with slogans ‘Atak kara atak kara Deshpandela atak kara’. Speaking to the Free Press Journal, Darade said, “I am disturbed and shocked as I did not expect that a political leader could go to such a level. I went with Deshpande and his party workers to inspect the roads in good faith. However, I was tricked into it as they forcefully handed me the board.” Clarifying his point, Deshpande said, “The road was then repaired within 12 hours and now that he is demanding my arrest, I have no issues in getting arrested. Once if I am arrested I will not apply for bail till all the roads in the city are repaired,” he added.
