Mumbai : A 78-year-old woman, Manjula Vora, was allegedly murdered by an unidentified man at Pranav Residency near Nappu Garden at Bhimani Street in Matunga East.

The incident took place at around 7.40 pm on Monday. The deceased was staying with her 75-year-old mentally challenged brother Ravilal.

The murder came to light on Monday evening when Manjula’s family doctor Mulchand Shah (60) visited the house. Shah used to visit her daily for routine check-up. On Monday when he came looking for the deceased, the doctor said a man in his 30s fled after opening the door. Shah is the prime eye-witness in the case. He also happens to be a complainant as it was he who noticed that the door was locked from inside and no one was opening it despite several knocks. “The deceased was attacked with a sharp knife on her neck. There are deep wounds on the neck,” said the Matunga Police.

According to the doctor, since nobody was opening the door at Vora’s house, he checked her whereabouts with the society watchman.  The watchman informed him that Manjula and her brother were still at home. The doctor again headed upstairs but got no response. This time, however, he found the door open and walked in to see a stranger inside, holding a bag. A young man, in his 30s, came out of Vora’s house saying that something is wrong inside and then immediately fled from the spot.

According to the Matunga police, the accused has not been identified yet since he was wearing a cap and his face was covered with a handkerchief. However, the accused has been captured on a CCTV camera in the building. This was confirmed by Balu Kakkad, Senior Police Inspector, Matunga police station. “The suspect has not been identified as yet. A sketch is being prepared based on the information provided by the witness. We are awaiting the post-mortem report of the deceased. A case of Section 302 (murder) has been recorded.  The matter is being further investigated.” said Kakkad. The husband of the deceased had expired a few years ago. She does not have any children. Shah is a resident of Pallavi building near Don Bosco School at Lotikar Marg in Matunga.
