New Delhi : The Supreme Court has asked the Central Government to update its National Policy on Older Persons that envisages state support to them to ensure financial and food security, health care, shelter and other needs.

Supreme Court Justices Madan B Lokur and U U Lalit said Friday that the National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP) is 15 years old, and needed to be updated. It asked the government to revisit the 1999 NPOP in the wake of the enactment of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The apex court said that it was dissatisfied with the reply of the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry, and asked it to disclose steps taken so far for setting up old age homes.

The apex court has already issued a notice to the Centre on a PIL seeking setting up of old age homes with basic health care facilities in every district of the country. The PIL, filed by advocate Sanjeeb Panigrahi, said that senior citizens were being deprived of their rights and sought directions to initiate appropriate steps to carry out a survey of old age homes across the country.
