Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has been hogging the headlines since BJP announced that she will be party’s candidate from Bhopal. With BJP accusing Congress of putting Sadhvi behind bars, the grand old party has hit back. The Congress has now alleged that Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who is facing trial in the Malegaon bomb blast case,  was first accused of a terrorism-related crime by the BJP state government in Madhya Pradesh when Shivraj Singh Chouhan as chief minister.

On Wednesday, when Sadhvi Pragya Thakur was announced as BJP’s candidate for the Bhopal parliamentary constituency, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described her as someone who was born to keep the nation secure. On many occasions, BJP leaders blamed Congress for victimising Thakur.

Hitting back at BJP, Congress spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi said “While announcing her candidature, former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan forgot that the person is accused of the 2008 Malegaon blast and is out on bail, so how could she be the protector of the nation,” reported PTI.

He further said, “Shivraj should not forget that his own police had arrested her twice for her alleged involvement in Sunil Joshi’s murder in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Shivraj should explain how a terrorist and murder accused can protect and strengthen the nation?”

In 2008, Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government arrested Sadhvi Thakur and eight others for their alleged involvement in the murder of RSS man Sunil Joshi in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh. In 2017, a Madhya Pradesh court acquitted Thakur of all charges in connection with the 2007 murder of Joshi, a right-wing activist.

BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Bhopal Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur on Thursday broke down while narrating how she was “tortured” while in custody of the police. Thakur (48) also set the tone for her high-profile poll battle in Bhopal against Congress candidate Digvijay Singh, whom she accused of using words like “Hindu” and “saffron terror”.
