New Delhi: Delhiites woke up to light drizzle on Thursday morning as the temperature took a dip to 24 degrees Celsius, bringing a sigh of relief from the scorching heat.

The government yesterday said that the Monsoon is expected to hit Kerala by May-end or early June.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan said that normal or above normal rainfall has been predicted by many forecasting agencies including India Meteorological Department this year.

He said the monsoon is expected to reach South Kerala either end of May or early days of June and forecast for which will be issued on May 15.

Harsh Vardhan also said the forecast for monsoon onset over Kerala has been correct and within the forecast limits during all the 10 years from 2005 till 2014.

In the wake of a sharp rise in temperatures in the National Capital Region (NCR), the Directorate of Education had asked all government, private and civic-run schools to declare compulsory summer vacation from May 11.

Temperatures in the national capital have been hovering between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature has been recorded at 23.8 degrees Celsius.
