Mumbai : Bollywood actress Rati Agnihotri on Saturday approached the Worli police and registered a case of torture and assault against her husband, Anil Virwani who is a businessman and architect. The actress has featured in famous Bollywood movies like Coolie and Ek Duje Ke Liye.
Police sources said the actress approached the Worli police on Saturday morning and submitted a written complaint against her husband. After verifying the contents of the case, the police recorded Agnihotri’s statement and registered an FIR against Virwani.
“The actress has said that her husband used to assault her over the years. However, she claims that on Thursday he assaulted her brutally. She went to Podar hospital where she was treated for her injuries. She has told us that she was in Lonavala between the days of the assault and the complaint,” said Vinay Kulkarni, senior police inspector of the Worli police station.
“We have registered the case on the basis of the actress’ statements and have also summoned her husband to record his statement in the matter. We will make arrest accordingly,” Kulkarni added. The police have registered a case against Virwani under sections 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 350 (Criminal force) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Sources said that the couple was married in 1985. The couple has a son, Tanuj Virwani, and had been living together in a building opposite Atria Mall in Worli.
