Ashok Gajapati Raju, scion of the Pusapati royal family of Vizianagaram, is one of the seniormost political leaders of Andhra Pradesh. In a political career spanning nearly 35 years, the 63-year-old Raju has been elected MLA seven times.
Raju launched his political career winning an assembly election in 1978 on a Janata Party ticket. In 1983, he joined TDP and has stood by Chandrababu Naidu throughout. He was a minister in all the TDP governments and held important portfolios such as finance, excise and revenue.
Raju has a clean image and is known to be an efficient administrator. He should fit in well in the Modi government.
