Mumbai: The two-day strike called by 11 central trade unions failed to impact normal life here though it left the financial sector paralysed.

Suburban railway, the city’s life line, functioned normally and road traffic was unaffected though there were fewer passengers using public transport.

Flight operations at the Mumbai airport were also normal despite a section of airport unions declaring their support to the strike, an airport spokesperson said.

“Suburban train operations are normal and we have not received any reports of disruption so far,” spokesmen for Central and Western Railway told PTI.

However, banking and insurance operations were completely shut due to 100 per cent participation by the employees.

“We have received massive response to our strike call and operations in banks and insurance companies are completely shut,” All India Banks Employees Association Vice President Vishwas Utagi said.

Though the Shiv Sena has supported the strike, it has decided not to enforce it.

Maharashtra government offices in Mumbai and other parts of the state reported normal attendance, Mantralaya sources said.

Educational institutions in the city also reported normal attendance.

The strike will also not affect HSC students, whose examinations begin tomorrow, with the School Bus Owners’ Association saying it will ferry students from railway stations to exam centres.

The Maharashtra Rajya Shikshan Sanstha Mahamandal (MRSSM), the umbrella body of private educational institutes across the state, is also not participating in the strike.
