Mumbai :  As a part its exercise to make the state ‘toll free’ the state government has decided to shut down 12 toll plazas, while there will be no toll for private four-wheelers (light vehicles) and state transport buses at 53 toll plazas, PWD minister Chandrakant Patil has said.

“Although we are exempting light vehicles from toll, the state government will not put any additional burden on heavy vehicles,” he added.

Among the 12 toll plazas that are going to be shut down from the midnight of Sunday (May 31) 11 belong to the PWD and one belongs to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced the decision at the budget session of the Assembly in the month of March.

Of the 12 toll plazas that would be shut down, only one is from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The toll plaza at Vadkhal on the Alibag-Pen-Khopoli road will be shut down as a part of this decision. Most of the other toll plazas that would be shut down are on the state highways and are not the big plazas.

Of the other 53 plazas where the light vehicles and state transport buses would get exemption, only six toll plazas are in the MMR. They include plazas at Kasheli on the Bhiwandi-Wadpe road, Kamothe on the Sion-Panvel highway, Gaimukh on the Thane-Ghodbunder road and two posts at Katai and Gove villages on the Bhiwandi-Kalyan-Shil road.

The government has instructed the toll plaza operators to provide two separate lanes for the ST buses and light vehicles and also prominently display instructions exempting these vehicles from toll. The decision on five Mumbai entry points is expected to be made by the end of July.

A committee headed by additional chief secretary, PWD, has been set up to check if toll booths on the fringes of Mumbai like Vashi, Airoli, Mulund, Bhandup, Dahisar, the sea link and Mumbai-Pune Expressway can offer any waiver to private cars and state buses.
