Mumbai : Was the motorman of the Bhayander fast local talking on his cell phone, a preoccupation due to which he forgot to apply the brake will in time, leading to the accident on Sunday? At least this is what the railway officials are trying to ascertain.

According to sources, the cell phone recovered from the motorman of the train, L S Tiwari, did not reveal any history of his recent calls. This has made the railway officials suspicious and they are wondering whether he had a good reason to delete the history after the mishap.

The inquiry into the mishap will also factor in the call record of motorman LS Tiwari and ascertain whether he was talking on the mobile just before the mishap. The details of his calls have been requisitioned from the private network operator.

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Western Railway, Shailendra Kumar, said, “He was on duty since 6 am and the mobile does not show any calls during this period. Whether any calls were indeed made from his number can only be ascertained once we have the records.”

The preliminary breath analyser test conducted on the motorman revealed no traces of alcohol. However, the blood test report is awaited and will be out by Monday. In his statement to officials, Tiwari has claimed that he had applied the brakes but they were not functional.

A senior official said, “What seems to have happened is that the motorman applied the brake too late and could not control it in time.”
