Mumbai : An assessment survey conducted by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on the structure and socio economic characteristics of buildings in Sewri revealed that around 229 families were affected due to Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project who will now be rehabilitated in Wadala.

The survey was conducted by MMRDA in July 2015 to ascertain the number of people residing in Sewri area who will be affected by the project.

The stretch of Sewri which consists of around 8.6 hectare land has several business, commercial building and religious places. MMRDA officials said that Sewri has 25 Bombay Port Trust (BPT) structures consisting of godowns which will be demolished for the project. “The survey revealed that there are in total 317 structures in Sewri, of which 229 families reside there. There are 53 business centres, 10 commercial structures which also includes religious places,” said a senior official from MMRDA.

As a part of resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R), MMRDA has planned to resettle the project affected families to 225 square feet flats in Bhakti Park in Wadala. According to the resettlement policy, the area provided to project affected persons is fixed by the government.

“We had asked the families residing in Sewri to submit the original BPT documents for us to resettle them in the approved square feet area. However, we haven’t received any documents yet. “We will be resettling 53 business centres and 229 residents in Sewri to Bhakti park. These 229 families are mostly slum dwellers. Several PAPs have earlier been shifted to Bhakti Park,” added the official.

The PAP in Sewri will be shifted once the vacant plots are ensured at Bhakti Park. “We plan to resettle the Sewri residents before the construction of the project work which would be conducted in December,” said MMRDA official.
