Islamabad: Security was beefed up in Islamabad Sunday after the Taliban vowed to attack the participants of an anti-drone rally currently underway in Pakistan.

Interior Minister Rahman Malik has directed the officials to strengthen security at the entry and exit points of the city, Geo TV reported.

Security at five-star hotels and the diplomatic enclave has been further strengthened, while roads leading to the area have been blocked by placing freight containers across them.

The rally to Waziristan organised by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party kicked off Saturday from various cities despite Taliban warnings to carry out suicide bomb attacks.

The march started from Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and other places. Former cricketer and PTI chief Imran Khan is leading the participants.

The Taliban has warned the PTI against holding the rally, accusing it of being a sympathizer of the west, the Jews and the Christians.

The Waziristan region, bordering Afghanistan, has been a stronghold of the Taliban and has seen violent clashes between militants and the security forces.

US has also intensified its drone strikes against the militants in the region, which has stoked anti-American sentiments in the country.
