Harsimrat is the wife of Punjab deputy CM and senior Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Badal. In her last term (2009-2014) in the Lok Sabha, Harsimrat was known for her fiery speeches on anti-Sikh riots, fight against the ban on turbans in European countries and issues related to farmers.
Graduated in Textile Designing, never wanted to be a politician. But when Captain Amarinder Singh of the Congress fielded his son Raninder from Bathinda, the Badal fortress, in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, she decided contest and suceeded over two lakh votes, the highest in Punjab
She runs an NGO, Nanhi Chhaan, which works for the girl child in her district. Bathinda has the second lowest sex ratio in Punjab at 875 women per 1,000 men. She hopes to pressurise both the Punjab and Union governments to introduce better schemes for the girl child and marginalised sections.
