Mumbai :  A state BJP booklet, that appears to be a sort of internal assessment document, has shown that the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on decline, while that of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is on rise.

The booklet, which was circulated during the recent party conclave at Nashik, is said to be a document strictly for internal circulation only. However, it has left several party workers red faced on the eve of the party’s 37th foundation day.

According to the booklet released by spokesperson Shweta Shalini, 40 percent people who were attracted towards the BJP in 2013-14 were supporters of Modi. The percentage of Modi supporters has come down to 25 percent in 2016. The number is equal to that of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ supporters.

Shalini’s presentation also mentioned that 45 percent came support base in 2013-14 was formed of the party workers. In 2016, it has remained only 15 percent. A graph also shows that 10 percent of the people support BJP because the party is in power.

The booklet was circulated after a presentation was made on a newly set up ‘war room’, which has chosen eight areas for action that include research and analysis, media relations, maintaining direct contact with the people using technology, election management and event management.

When contacted Shalini claimed that she did not mean Modi’s popularity was on decline. “I have stated that both Modi ji and Devendra ji are enjoying the equal number of supporters. That means Devendra ji’s supporters are on rise. Earlier, there was no rise. Now, people believe that the working style of both Modi ji and Devendra ji is identical,” she said.

Her argument, however, has not gone down well among the party workers. The booklet has angered them as they feel their hard work has not been counted while assessing the party’s influence over the masses.

“It is ridiculous to say that only 15 percent workers have influence over the people. We are working hard since those days when the party was nowhere near the power,” said a senior functionary, who did not want to be identified.

Shalini’s senior in the party, another spokesperson Madhu Chavan refused to comment on the issue.
