Lucknow : Bharat and Mamta, a Dalit couple, were allegedly murdered by a shopkeeper in a village in Mainpuri district on Thursday morning.

It is learnt that the couple had purchased a packet of biscuits worth Rs 15 from the grocery shop of one Ashok Mishra in Lakhnipur village a few days ago. However, they had defaulted on payment. Incidentally, they owed Mishra some other dues, too.

On Thursday morning, the shopkeeper accosted the duo when they were going to work and demanded his dues; when the deceased expressed their inability to pay and sought more time, the accused picked up an axe and attacked them. The attack was so ferocious that

the man and his wife died on the spot. Both were attacked several times by the accused apparently in a fit of rage. The deceased man was a labourer and the couple has five children. Reports said the accused fled from the spot after murdering the couple and hid in a nearby house. However, the villagers called the police and he was traced and taken into custody.  The deceased belonged to the Nat community which is nomadic in nature and used to perform acrobatics in village fairs. Now days, these poor and mostly landless people are mainly engaged as unskilled agricultural labourers. Incidentally, Mainpuri, adjacent to Etawah, is the Lok Sabha constituency of Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav.
