Santiago de Cuba:A new seismic standard for buildings capable of withstanding earthquakes is ready in Cuba, Grisel Morejon and Bladimir Moreno, director and deputy director, respectively, of the National Centre for Seismological Research, reported.
In statements to Prensa Latina, the two scientists stated that this guideline will replace the currently in force since 1999, and it is based on a new seismic hazard map drawn up by CENAIS experts, from which the corresponding committee of the
Ministry of Construction worked.
Experts from eastern provinces, from universities to designing companies, and others involved in investment processes in the country, worked in this effort.
This updating includes a training process that should begin in the coming months with a view to the implementation of the standard as of 2014, said Moreno and Morejon, who considered it an essential tool for mitigation of damages to face earthquakes.
The next master’s degree in earthquake engineering will be given at the Construction Faculty, of the University of Oriente.
This will be another significant step towards a proper preparation of professionals, responsible for achieving safe buildings to preserve human lives and material resources.
