New Delhi: Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee termed the incident of a traffic policeman being caught on camera thrashing a woman with a brick as ‘inhuman’ and appealed to the government to take strict action against the former.

“This is absolutely inhuman. We strongly condemn it and we demand that the government start a probe and take strong action against the person concerned. Whatever be the reason, nobody can hit a woman like that,” Mukherjee said.

“A traffic policeman, who is supposed to maintain the law and order on the road, is attacking a woman like that, and so violently with a brick. This is absolutely ghastly,” she added.

Earlier in the day, a Delhi traffic policeman was caught on camera attacking a woman with a brick. The victim was on her way home after picking up her children from school on a two wheeler, when the policeman struck the woman with a brick.

“I was sitting with my children on the scooter. First the cop broke my scooter. I just want justice. The person who hit me should be punished. The person should think ten times before hitting somebody” the woman told media here.

Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said the brick-throwing policeman has been suspended. “Strict action will be taken against him. We regret that such a shameful act has been committed by a traffic policeman,” Bassi said.
