NEW DELHI : The Congress’ first list of 194 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections released today included party President Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani.

Sonia Gandhi and her son will contest from pocket boroughs of Rae Bareli and Amethi, respectively. Nilekani, who joined the party recently, will contest from the Bangalore South constituency.

While Lok Sabha Speaker Meera Kumar will contest from Sasaram in Bihar, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has got ticket from Solapur in Maharashtra. Industrialist Naveen Jindal will contest from Kurukshetra, Haryana, and cricketer Mohd Kaif has been given ticket from Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh.

A party leader claimed that over 35% candidates in the list are below 50 years, a move that bears the stamp of Rahul Gandhi’s stand to give chance to the young.

The party’s candidates for constituencies in Mumbai are Gurudas Kamath, Sanjay Nirupam, Priya Dutt, Eknathrao Gaikwad and Milind Deora.

The party has also given tickets to three regional actors Bhojpuri star Ravi Kishen, and Aparajita Mohanty and Bijay Mohanty from Odisha.

The list also included former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s niece Karuna Shukla from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh.

Union ministers Salman Khurshid, Sriprakash Jaiswal and Beni Prasad Verma have been given tickets for Farrukhabad, Kanpur and Gonda seat, respectively.

After poor performance in the past few assembly elections, the Congress faces a tough task in the general elections, with most opinion polls predicting a rout for the party-led United Progressive Alliance and more than 200 seats for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance.

The elections will be held in nine phases beginning Apr 7 and counting will be held on May 16.
