Mumbai :  It was a day of major hiccups on the Central line: To begin with, over 100 local trains were running late by about 30 minutes during the morning peak hour.

As if playing catch up, a similar number of trains were late by a good half an hour in the evening rush hour, too. To add to the woes of the weary commuters, the power at CST station tripped and the commuters were literally groping in darkness between 9:30 pm and 10 pm.

It was indeed a black Friday for Central Railway (CR) commuters. It all started at 8 am when the CR officials decided to run trains but with a speed cap of 15 kmph at nine odd spots between CST and Kurla. This was done to ascertain the impact of the speed restriction after the conversion from Direct Current to Alternating Current.

Result: The punctuality of over a 100 trains was affected. Chief PRO of CR, Narendra Patil, said, “No trains were cancelled, even though they were delayed. There were about 100 trains running late by 30 minutes and more.”

The services stabilized later in the afternoon only to be disrupted yet again during the evening hours due to a signal failure. A signal failure was reported at Dombivali station due to which all the trains on down line (towards Kalyan) were stuck. This resulted in bunching of the stranded trains.

If this was not all, the commuters were enveloped in darkness at CST station for about 30 minutes due to the power failure. There were no lights at the suburban station between 9:30 pm and 10 pm; even the indicators went off. The commuters were left sweating but patiently waited until the power was restored.

Till the time of going to press, Railway officials remained unavailable to comment on the reason behind the power failure.
