Mumbai : The police claim to have arrested the man who robbed and raped a Spanish national in her Bandra flat on Monday morning. According to them, it is the same man who was arrested for stealing valuables worth Rs 12 lakh from actor Dino Morea’s house in Bandra ten days ago.
The Bandra police said they had showed a photograph of the man — Mohammad Ansari, aged 30 — to the victim, a 27-year-old musician, and she had identified him. Ansari has 29 cases of theft and burglary against his name.
“The victim has identified him and is 100 per cent sure that he was the one who raped her. Ansari, however, is a tough nut to crack and is not confessing to the crime,’’ said a highly placed source.
He added, “We had arrested Ansari last week and had made a 100 per cent recovery in the burglary that took place at Morea’s house. Unfortunately, he immediately secured bail and committed this grave crime,”
Ansari was nabbed from Reay Road area in south Mumbai. The accused would be produced on Wednesday before a local court. Investigators would not seek his police custody, so that he could be sent to judicial remand. ‘’If the suspect is sent to judicial remand, then we could immediately go in for an identification parade as the victim has expressed a desire to leave India in four to five days,” an officer said.
The police are yet to find the kitchen knife used to threaten the victim.
However, the police refused to divulge the sequence of events leading to the alleged rape.
An investigating official said, “We are trying our best to join all the dots. The medical reports are awaited and we are in the process of reconstructing the sequence of events based on evidence. The process of collecting circumstantial evidence as well as the forensic evidence is underway.”
“We have found fresh scratch marks on Ansari’s body that he must have sustained while he was climbing to the third floor. We have taken the DNA samples, his footprints, his fingerprints and the vaginal swabs of the victim. We found footprints at the crime spot,” he said.
However, the cops have failed to retrieve the valuables stolen from the house of the rape victim. The valuables include Euros and Indian currency.
Three burglaries had taken place on the Perry Cross road that night and a resident living in one of the targeted building had scared away the accused. The police are now trying to find witnesses who can corroborate that Ansari was the same miscreant who had committed these burglaries.
