Other contestants comfort Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez, top right, after she was incorrectly crowned Miss Universe at the Miss Universe pageant on Sunday in Las Vegas.
Los Angeles : It was the ultimate heartbreak. The host of Miss Universe messed up the winner and crowned the runner-up. So, for a brief moment at least the contestant from Colombia was the Miss Universe. Ariadna Guiterrez jumped with joy, waved the Colombian flag, smiled ear to ear and blew kisses at the audience. The ceremony host, Steve Harvey, fixed his mistake the instant he relaised there had been a botch-up. “OK folks… I have to apologize,” he told a confused crowd in Las Vegas. “I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card.” Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines was equally stunned and at a loss of what to do.
Finally, keeping her nerve, she walked to the front of the stage, where the coveted crown was taken off the head of Miss Colombia and put on hers. Harvey later took to the social media to apologize, but he took another misstep when he misspelled both Colombia and the Philippines in an initial tweet: That message was deleted. “I don’t want to take away from this amazing night and pageant, as well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing,” Harvey wrote later. Indian beauty Urvashi Rautela could not make it to the final 15. It’s been 15 years since India won the Miss Universe title. Lara Dutta was crowned back in 2000.
