Mumbai : For second consecutive day, fluctuations in the city’s pollution levels continued wherein the air quality index (AQI) for the city jumped to 304 on Wednesday as compared to 236 on Tuesday. System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) has predicted that the air quality levels will go up to 307 on Thursday which is above the AQI of ‘0-100’ considered
According to Real-time data available on SAFAR’s mobile application, Mazagaon, Malad and Borivali were among the worst polluted areas in the city. The cleaner areas included Colaba and Worali with AQI of 104 and 125 respectively. Gufran Beig, project director of SAFAR said, “We are witnessing fluctuations in the temperatures, humidity and wind patterns which is collaborating to the change in the air pollution levels. And with such changes, it is very normal for the AQI to go up by 10 to 20 points.”
With the rising air pollution levels, medical experts state that people especially suffering from respiratory illnesses should look after themselves and avoid travelling in the polluted air. “Breathing such polluted air can lead to various ailments including breathlessness and nauseous. Therefore, we would suggest the high-risk groups including children and elderly should be cautious,” said Dr Shahid Bharmare, general physician of Kohinoor Hospital.
