AIIMS doctors to treat sterilization victims in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: A team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will leave for Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, today to attend to patients who were left in a critical state after undergoing sterilization operations.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and expressed his concern over the Bilaspur incident, and asked him to ensure a thorough investigation.

Eight women reportedly lost their lives and 30 others were left critical after undergoing a sterilization operation at a government camp in Bilaspur district.

Out of the 85 women who were operated upon at the government-run Nemi Chand hospital in the Pendari area of Bilaspur as part of a family planning camp almost 55 suffered due to the sterilization surgery.

The government has ordered an investigation into the incident and announced a compensation of Rs. two lakh each for the next of kin of the eight deceased women.
