Padsalgikar is a former IB director
Mumbai : The State Government on Saturday appointed Dattatray Padsalgikar as the new Mumbai Police commissioner.
Padsalgikar was brought in after Ahmad Javed retired on Saturday morning, after 36 years of service. Padsalgikar, a 1982 batch officer was a former special Intelligence Bureau Director. He has also been a deputy commissioner of Zone 2 and DCP (Detection) in the city. He has also been with the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police and at various deputations at the State cadre.
By bringing in Padsalgikar, the State Government has downgraded the post of Mumbai police commissioner to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADG). In October last year, the state had promoted and transferred former commissioner Rakesh Maria and also announced that the post of the commissioner will be of the rank of Director General (DG). Since Javed was a DG level officer, he was appointed as the new commissioner of Mumbai police, even though he was retiring in less than five months.
Padsalgikar is an ADG Rank officer and has served with the IB for more than 12 years. Sources inform that he will be promoted to a DG level officer in February. He will officially take charge of the office on Sunday.
Farewell To Javed
Earlier, speaking at his ceremonial farewell hosted by his fellow officers, Javed asked all the deputy commissioners and above rank officers to make it a priority to look into the wellbeing of the force. He also called constables and low ranking officers the roots of the force. “The welfare of constabulary is very important since it reflects on the efficiency of the whole force. I would like to give a suggestion to the officers to do so,” he said.
Recalling his childhood days in Lucknow and Delhi, Javed said he was humbled by the way he was accepted as an officer in Maharastra. “I had come from Lucknow and I am happy by the love and support that I got from Maharashtra and the progress of my career. The ceremony ended with the old ritual of fellow IPS officers pulling the decorated open jeep, by two long ropes, occupied by the outgoing commissioner till the exit. (Pic on Pg 3)
