Mumbai : The Central Railway undertook successful test charging of its 25000 Volts Alternate Current (AC) traction on its Harbour line on Sunday midnight, which has paved the way for introducing the 12 car trains on the Harbour line.
The Central Railway is expected to introduce the 12 car trains on its Harbour line from April 1.
Central Railway had operated a special traffic and power block in the midnight of Saturday and Sunday on the Harbour and Trans Harbour lines for test charging with 25 KV AC in connection with Direct Current(DC) to Alternate Current(AC) conversion work. The Harbour and Trans-harbour lines are the only Indian Railway corridors which run on 1500 V DC current.
The AC traction would allow Central Railways to run longer trains and also at higher speeds than the current 80 kmph limit. The AC traction will also ensure energy-saving.
“After the successful test charging, the conversion from AC to DC can be done. After that as per the availability of rake, 12 car services can be introduced”, said a CR spokesperson. “We may introduce the 12 car trains from April 1, and it will take another two months to run the services full fledged on Harbour line,” the official added.
