Thane: Police have arrested 22 people for violence and arson during an agitation that caused a major disruption of suburban train services on Central Railway yesterday and left lakhs of commuters stranded at multiple places.

Mumbai came to a halt for over six hours when angry commuters staged a protest at Diva station over frequent train delays. The demonstration turned violent as agitators pelted stones and engaged in rioting and arson within and outside the station premises.

Railway Police arrested four persons in Dombivali on the basis of CCTV footage and video shootings that showed them destroying Railway property and preventing public servants from discharging their duty.

“While the protests were on at Diva, some unruly people vented their anger by taking law into their hands at Dombivali station. Accordingly, an FIR was registered and the four accused were apprehended last evening based on the electronic evidence,” Government Railway Police (Central Railway) DCP Rupali Ambure told PTI today.

In a related development, Mumbra Police have arrested 18 people for arson and rioting outside Diva station. “We have identified the rioters and arrested 18 persons since last night. Some more arrest are likely in the coming days,” said Parag Manere, Thane DCP (Crime Branch).

Train commuters also held agitations at Thane, Dombivali and Kalyan stations.
