2 dead, 35 injured as 6.7 magnitude earthquake jolts Northeast

Imphal: Two people have been killed and 35 have been injured after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the India-Myanmar border around 4:30 am today with the epicentre in Tamenglong district of Manipur.

Subsequently, tremors were felt in the north east states and West Bengal and according to the US Geological Survey, the quake was 57 kilometres deep.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is in Assam, on the developing situation due to the earthquake and asked him to oversee the situation.

“Had a telephone conversation with Assam CM Shri Tarun Gogoi on the earthquake in the state & the region,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

He also spoke to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki in the wake of the earthquake.

Reports of massive damage have emerged especially in Manipur where large cracks appeared in buildings and several walls have collapsed.

Panicked people were seen rushing out of their homes and buildings after felt massive tremors twice in almost 60 seconds.

Meanwhile, a team from the National Disaster Response Force has been instructed to move from Guwahati to the areas affected by the earthquake, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
