James Beard says, “Food is our common ground, a universal experience.” Good food is relished regardless of roots, place, or time. In the maximum city, where there are food joints at almost every corner, some extraordinary masters of the culinary world have challenged themselves to serve a completely new style of dining. In John Walter’s words, “The only think I like better than talking about Food is eating.” And to share your eating experiences we set the tables at these eateries ready to flag themselves in 2016.

With its doors opened in 2016, NRI-Not Really Indian is a fresh embellishment to the restaurants in Mumbai. Headed by Michelin star chef Atul Kochhar, NRI is all set to serve dishes by Indian immigrants who gave it a twist around the world. Hence you can certainly expect dishes like Roti Canai, Pepper Crab, Monkfish with Crab Kofta and Gunpowder (Molgapudi), Caribbean Goat Curry, East African Zeera Chicken, South African Bunny Chow and Bobotie on the menu. Spreading across 3,000 square feet, this Bandra eatery serves family-size portions. With an upscale setting yet a touch of street food style decor, NRI is worth a visit. Right next to NRI resides chef Kochhar’s second offering Lima, which is a tapas lounge that will treat you to Mexican, Brazilian and Peruvian food.

Location: 2 North Avenue, Maker Maxity, Bandra Kurla Complex

Mumbai gets another watering hole that promises to be a primary pick among wine lovers. TAG stands for The Amateur Gallery, which refers to a separate 2,000 square feet space above the restaurant that will showcase art works by students and is slated to be opened in March. Chef Ranveer Brar proudly leads the way with flavours around the world. Some of which include Tea-Smoked Tofu with a Ponzu Emulsion, and Raspberry Rasmalai with Hibiscus Air. Aren’t these some stunning names to relish? And if you’re clearly all about the wine cellar, guzzle up some premium recommendations.

Location: Kamala Mills, OSS Compound, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, Lower Parel.

English Vinglish is another project Chef Brar has been working on. It is a Juhu patisserie that will sell Indian desserts with a contemporary bend. It has been slated to be opened by the end of January 2016.

The Tham Brothers, Keenan and Ryan, owners of Trilogy, will be launching Khyma an Oriental bar at Sea Princess Hotel, Juhu this month and a yet another untitled bar at Kamala Mills in March.

Ace restaurateur Zorawar Kalra’s famous ‘modern Indian bistro’ Farzi Cafe is stepping from Delhi to Mumbai at Kamala Mills by the end of February. Zorawar will also be launching MasalaBar at Bandra by the end of this month. MasalaBar is an Indian lab-like bar that will be gleaming with organic bees wax candles. How fantastic is that?

With a royal name, The Captain’s Table is a fine dining restaurant that will be circling delectable seafood swimming its way into BKC this month.

Location: Ground floor, Pinnacle Corporate Park, BKC.

The glorious idea of this fun style eatery comes from the boys behind Bonobo, Cafe Nemo and JamJar Diner. They are taking over the cafe at Smaaash and re-vamping it as a ‘carnival cafe’ that will cater a dessert bar called The Big Fat Treat and a sangria bar. It is set to sell fun fair food like waffle sticks and churros, and will open to the public on January 18.

Location: Smaaash, Kamala Mills Compound, Gate No. 4, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, Lower Parel.

It is a brand new addition to fine dining in the city by the owners of The Bar Stock Exchange. Like the name suggests, it is a vegetarian Pan Asian restaurant to be opened at Ghatkopar this month.
