The Bar Terminal if packed with surprises on all fronts, says GITA HARI.
Apart from delightful drinks and scrumptious food if décor enhances your hanging out preferences, then this brand new (less-than-a-month-old) café, The Bar Terminal (TBT) is the place to be. Strategically located near Bombay Stock Exchange, 1500 sq ft TBT is a pure vegetarian place and comes from the owners of Spice & Flavours restaurant situated below. It sports trendy interiors and design elements including some quirky chairs of car tyres with the back rests carrying funny notes in English and Hindi.
For instance, ‘Piyo aur pilao’, ‘I am Too Sober’ and more hilarious quotes keep you amused in the pause period. Faux doors and windows in vibrant hues adorn the walls. The bar area is pulsating with colorful plastic baskets in the counter, unconventional bar stools with cycle pedals and flippant signs of ‘Caution: Alcohol Zone’.
The well-stocked bar is designed attractively while the wooden ceiling adds to the warmth of the place. I always wondered how to reutilize the innumerable CDs I had at home and one look up at the chandeliers at TBT made of compact discs and bulbs protruding from cameras made me mentally applaud the interior designer’s creativity in recycling resources. And so goes for the many salvaged things (some tables resembled computer motherboards, napkin holders were made of keyboards) around this all-day bar as pleasant EDM music plays in the background. Not to forget the loo walls full of funny graffiti.
If the décor is groovy, much more can be expected from the menu and presentation of food and cocktails. We called for Jack Sparrow at Rs.345 – a potent rum-based cocktail served in a barrel-like ceramic pitcher is infused with lime juice and jaggery syrup. Love & Lock is for the die-hard romantics which has two drinks with different spirits but locked in a cage.
Just throw open the cage and the alcohol starts flowing freely to intoxicate you! Kit Kat Milkshake was heavenly especially when you get to bite into a Kit Kat too. Well-informed and helpful Captain Vikas Tushamad insisted I try Smoked Berry and I was impressed by fresh strawberry and tequila sour mix served with dry smoke (call it molecular gastronomy or liquid nitrogen) in a large glass bowl and if you wish to order this, be prepared to shell out Rs.699.
Listed under Juggad in the menu are some snacks that have been tampered with or just call them fusion items. Can you drink pattice – yes or so it appears at TBT which offers Ragda Pattice Shots (Rs.225) – pattice placed on shot glass filled with layers of ragda and chutneys at the bottom. Pizza Puchkas (Rs.255) – panipuris in unison with pizza ingredients topped with grated cheese, served in tart shells create a burst of flavours in the mouth.
Manchurian Sandwich is an unusual combo of grilled Chinese dumplings in bread. Not done with sandwich yet, you can try Bhelpuri Sandwich (Rs.215) to the accompaniment of French fries. Masala Pav with veggies and cheesy fillings or Mozzarella stick with honey chill lime dip was visually appealing too besides pleasing the palate. Pesto Paneer Bhurji (Rs.295) comprises of cottage cheese crumbles in pesto sauce and comes with a cheese-laden bun. I have savoured crispier Cigar Rolls (Rs.295) yet the stuffing of spinach and cheese was good.
Pizzas are thin crust with enticing toppings, priced between Rs.435 to Rs.455. Penne Pesto Pasta at Rs.395 was value for money. Risotto Sicilian of Arborio rice with fusion sauce, vegetables and cheese (Rs.455) had a smooth texture and appetizing flavour.
Maggi lovers have a few exciting dishes (priced at Rs.155) to look forward to – the one-dish bowl of cheesy Bideshi Maggi full of mushrooms, broccoli, zucchini, sundried tomatoes and bell peppers in masala Maggi. If being all spiced-up is your preference, go for Tadkawali Maggi teeming with onion, tomatoes and green chillies. Desserts are restricted to Sizzling Brownie (Rs.295), Mousse (Rs.185) and Ice-creams.
Be it the décor, drinks or food, including the bill which is presented in a cute trunk, The Bar Terminal is packed with surprises on all fronts!
