Eggs are more essential than ever; Read why

Suresh Chitturi, Vice-Chairman & Managing Director Srinivasa Farms and Vice Chairman International Egg Commission (IEC), tells Nichola Pais why eggs are more essential than ever

Indian eating habits are fast changing yet there are certain myths about considering eggs as non-vegetarian. Thanks to social media, there has been a lot of awareness on busting these myths and promoting egg as an inexpensive pack of protein and nutrition. Vegetarians have started including egg in their diet.

The IEC was formed in 1964 in order to give a global presence to egg producers and to promote and popularise egg consumption as part of a balanced diet. World Egg Day was established at the IEC Vienna 1996 conference when it was decided to celebrate World Egg Day every year on the second Friday in October (October 12, this year). The idea behind the day was raising awareness across the world, of the important place eggs have in human nutrition.

World Egg Day celebrations help to inspire, educate and inform about the goodness of the egg. IEC had initiated many awareness programmes, and is consistently engaging with stakeholders through various platforms on the goodness of eggs and the number is increasing steadily.

On World Egg Day, many countries around the globe organise exciting activities filled with adventure, fun and awareness promoting the benefits of eggs to human health and encourage all age groups and fitness levels to participate.

Ideal for kids

Eggs have a reputation of being good for you, but it turns out they are an essential element of a child’s diet. One of the best ways we help is by feeding our kids a delicious and nutritious diet. We want kids to have the energy they need to learn, grow, and succeed. Eggs can play a big role in that. A high quality source of protein is vital, particularly in childhood. For a healthy brain development in a child, choline present in the egg yolk is very important. It boosts parts of the brain important for learning and memory.

Wholesome food

Eggs are a wholesome food, free of sugar, and rich in vitamins and nutrients. Studies have shown the role eggs can play to regulate and maintain a child’s weight. Consumption of higher-protein food like eggs increased children’s fullness by 32%, decreased hunger by 14% and desire to eat by 30% compared to a carbohydrate-rich meal. For healthy weight regulation in children, eggs can be key!

Eggs are an excellent source of iron and are a nutritious source of protein, fat, Vitamins A, D, E, and B12, and choline. Eggs offer so much to our children. They are at the core of a diet that will help them grow up healthy, strong, and smart.
