Amidst Smriti Irani degree row, meet 10 highly qualified Indian politicians

In today’s era, many areas of employment are opening up, which is a good thing. These respectable jobs opportunities ask for either degree courses or some amazing skills pertaining to the area. Well, even applying for a peon’s job asks for some educational qualification. But there’s one job that does not require any educational stipulation or special skills for that matter – to become a ‘neta’. The one job that if made proper use can make the country a better place to live in, doesn’t ask for any specific qualification. And this has to some extent resulted in some ‘unexpected results’. No, we are not saying all the politicians are less educated, there are a lot of highly qualified ministers as well. Textiles Minister of India Smriti Irani’s educational qualification had always made headlines and stirred controversy. Irani has recently revealed that she undertook her exams for Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) the first year from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning, but ‘did not complete the three-year degree course’.

Asaduddin Owaisi
President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and three-time Member of Parliament, Asaduddin Owaisi is a barrister by profession and studied at Lincoln’s Inn of London.

Shashi Tharoor
You will be surprised to know that MP from Thiruvananthapuram constituency Shashi Tharoor completed his Ph.D. at the age of 22. Yes, just 22! He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from St Stephen’s College in Delhi and received his MA and MALD from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.

Manmohan Singh
Former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh is one of the most highly educated politicians. He got his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Punjab University. In 1957, he completed his Economics Tripos from the University of Cambridge and three years later attended the University of Oxford for the D.Phil.

P Chidambaram
Former Finance Minister of India, P Chidambaram pursued his BSc degree in statistics from Chennai’s Presidency College. He completed his Bachelor of Laws from the Madras Law College and MBA from the Harvard Business School. He also holds a Master’s degree from Loyola College in Chennai.

Dr Harsh Vardhan
Dr Harsh Vardhan is the Union Cabinet Minister for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, is one of the highly qualified politicians of the ruling cabinet. In 1979, he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, Kanpur. Four years later, in 1983, he earned his Master of Surgery in Otorhinolaryngology.

Sachin Pilot
Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan and the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee, Sachin Pilot holds a B.A. degree from St Stephens College and a Diploma in Marketing from the Institute of Management and Technology. He also has an MBA degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA.

Mayawati is the national President of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) who served four separate terms as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. She pursued her B.A. in 1975 at the Kalindi College, University of Delhi. In 1983, she was awarded her LL.B from University of Delhi.

Akhilesh Yadav
Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the current President of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav has a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the University Of Sydney, Australia.

Mulayam Singh Yadav
Mulayam Singh Yadav is the founder of Samajwadi Party, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh who currently serves as the Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Azamgarh. Yadav has three degrees – B.A (Karm Kshetra Post Graduate College in Etawah), B.T (A. K. College in Shikohabad) and M.A in Political Science (Agra University).

Lalu Prasad Yadav
President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, former Chief Minister of Bihar, former UPA Minister of Railways, and former Member of Parliament of the 15th Lok Sabha, well Lalu Prasad has donned many hats. One should never judge a book by its cover. The saying is perfect when it comes to Lalu Prasad Yadav, he completed his Bachelor of Laws and a Master in Political Science from B. N. College of Patna University. In 2004, he turned down Patna University’s Honorary Doctorate.
